Institute
The Institute for Astrophysics in Göttingen is the only university institut in the state of Lower Saxony where teaching and research in astronomy and astrophysics is performed. It is is part of the department of physics at the Georg-August University and located in the building of the department since 2005.
The scientific research areas cover the fields solar physics, stellar and planetary astrophysics, galactic and extragalactic astrophysics, and cosmology. Highly qualified mechanical and electronics workshops are capable of building telescopes and scientific instruments, like e.g. spectrographs.
Scientific observations are performed with own telescopes of the institute in Göttingen, Texas, and Southafrica and with international observatories located e.g. in Spain, Texas, Chile, and Southafrica. In addition, space-based telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope, the X-ray telescopes Chandra and XMM-Newton, and the space-craft Parker Solar Probe are used. Data collected at these observatories are analyzed at the institute in Göttingen using powerful computers and are interpreted by theoretical models and complex numerical simulations.
