Chiba University was founded in 1949 through the merger of five different schools and maintains four different campuses, which is why medicine and horticulture programmes are taught separately from the other faculties.

Campus: Chiba, Prefecture Chiba

Founded in 1897 and one of four former Imperial universities, Kyoto University is one of Japan's top ranked public research universities. Among its distinguished alumni are five prime ministers of Japan and 19 Nobel Prize laureates. Through its Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences it offers undergraduate exchange students a wide array of courses in English. Students at the Master's level can also take courses or pursue research stays.

Located in Osaka, Japan, Kanasai University embraces the philosophy gaku-no-jitsuge, "harmony between academia and society". Through its Global Frontier Program it offers 8 theme based undergraduate modules. Study and research at the graduate level in Japanese and partially in English is also possible.

Tohoku University was established as Japan's third national university in 1907. Located on the ancient site of Aoba Castle in Sendai City, Tohoku University is proud to be ranked among Japan's leading universities. In 1913 it became the first Japanese university to admit female students. Tohoku offers exchange students the opportunity to study in a range of subjects in the sciences, social sciences, management and conduct scientific research in its lab-based COLABS Program.

Tokyo University of Foreign Studies is a small, specialized university focused primarily on foreign language, international affairs and foreign studies. Among the specialized courses in these areas it offers courses in languages seldomly taught at universities as well as topics related to economics and cultural studies.

Campus: Fuchu, Prefecture Tokyo

Number of Students: 4,400

Faculties: Language and Culture Studies, International and Area Studies, Global Studies (fields of study: Europe and America I and II, Russia and Eastern Europe, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South and West Asia, Japan, and others).

Language requirements: English B2 / Japanese B2 (for courses in Japanese)

Housing: International student dormitories are available on-campus. If a spot is not available there, TUFS will assist the students in finding off-campus accommodation, e.g. in a private dormitory or apartment.
