Travel and Accommodation

We have reserved some rooms (Single room €50, Double room €65 per day) in the Hotel Kasseler Hof (http://www.kasselerhof.de) to accommodate most of our speakers and participants. However, those participants who are presenting papers will have priority.

For those who wish to make their own arrangements, we include a list (download here) ranging from expensive to budget accommodation.

Travelling to Göttingen::
Göttingen is well connected by road and rail to all major cities in Europe.

The nearest airport is Hannover (a little over one hour away by fast train); the other major airports nearby are Frankfurt (am Main) and Hamburg (slightly over two hours away by fast train).

For train timings and tickets, please go to www.db.de (German) or http://www.deutschebahn.com/site/bahn/en/start.html (English)

For more information about Göttingen please go to
http://www.goettingen.de (German) or http://www.goettingen-tourismus.de (English)

A Checklist: Before you leave

For participants travelling from outside the euro zone, please make sure you have enough cash in euros to at least buy your train ticket at the airport to get to Göttingen. Information about train schedules and prices can be obtained from the website
http://www.bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/index.shtml

Göttingen in mid December can be very cold with snow and rain etc. Although all buildings are heated, since there is a fair amount of walking involved, please make sure you have warm clothes, sturdy shoes, a water-and-wind-proof-warm jacket, gloves, cap and an umbrella. Of course, passports, etc. and also the books, DVDs etc. that you might want to bring along for display or sale.

For foreign participants expecting travel costs reimbursement it might be good to download and fill in the travel expenses form (which can be downloaded here) before starting out because it will give you an idea what documents are required. We shall not circulate hard copies of full papers during the workshop; so please bring along what you need. There will be free internet access at the Conference Centre via W-LAN, so please bring your laptops along if you need to access the net.

B What to do on arrival at Frankfurt Airport:

In case you are flying in to Frankfurt, you need to catch your train to Göttingen directly from the Fernbahnhof [long-distance train station, opposite Terminal 1] of the airport, so follow signs to it. [Note Frankfurt airport also has a Regional train station Regionalbahnhof so make sure you get to the right one]. In case you arrive in Terminal 2 you will have to first get to Terminal 1 [via Sky line or by a free coach service] where the trains stations are.
Find here a map of the airport buildings.

Please make sure you have a valid train ticket before boarding a train and understand clearly where you have to change trains (if at all) before boarding. A one-way ticket Frankfurt Airport-Göttingen costs 61 Euro [second class]. The connection from Hanover airport costs 34 Euro. You can buy your tickets either at the ticket counter (where they also speak English) at the train station or at ticket vending machines [red-blue boxes]. It makes no difference in cost whether you buy a one-way or a return ticket (which is twice as much).

Depending on the kind of train you take, it takes roughly from 2 to 2 hours 45 minutes to get to Göttingen from Frankfurt (and only about an hour from Hannover). There are fast ICE/IC trains almost every half hour from the airport to Göttingen (and from Hannover).

C What to do on arrival at Göttingen train station:

In Göttingen you can easily walk to Hotel Kasseler Hof [approx. 10-15 mins walking distance] but you could also take a taxi if you have heavy luggage. Note however that we shall not be able to reimburse any taxi charges whatsoever. Here is a map of how to get to the hotel (and/or to the Conference Centre) from the train station. Please download this map and bring it with you if you propose to walk to the hotel from the station.

The Performing Identity workshop will be held at the Conference Centre of Göttingen University which is marked in the map. Note that it takes 20-30 minutes to walk from Hotel Kasseler Hof to the Conference Centre, so for those who are arriving in Göttingen only on Thursday afternoon with light luggage it might be better to go straight to the Conference Centre [the direct route should not take more than 30 minutes] following the directions in the map. Please let us know if you have problems with walking the distance and we shall see if we can organise for someone to meet you at the station.

You could also take Bus No 12 from the train station to go to the Hotel Kasseler Hof and to the Conference Centre. Please find the timetable here.

Here is Meenaxi's mobile number again in case of emergency: +49-(0)176-99498901

Further information will be put into the workshop folder which will be made available at the registration desk. But please do not hesitate to contact Meenaxi if there is some information or clarification that you might still need.

See you all at Göttingen and have a pleasant trip!
