Masters stream “Theoretical Physics”
The Institute for Theoretical Physics coordinates and offers the Masters stream “Theoretical Physics” as part of the physics masters programme at the University of Göttingen.
The new stream offers a broad-based curriculum covering the whole range of theoretical physics, both classical and quantum, and a spectrum of methods from analytical calculations to advanced computational approaches. Core courses include Advanced Statistical Mechanics, Advanced Quantum Mechanics, Methods of Computational Physics and a project-based module on Advanced Computational Physics.
A broad range of advanced modules bring students up to the edge of current research, including e.g. Topology in Condensed Matter Physics, Quantum Field Theory, Computational Quantum Many-Body Physics, General Relativity, Cosmology, Non-Equilibrium Statistical Physics and Theoretical Biophysics. A special feature are modules emphasizing methodological connections, such as a seminar on Classical-quantum connections in theoretical physics. The second year of the two-year programme offers students the chance to write a substantial, research-level Masters thesis in one of the internationally leading research groups of the Institute for Theoretical Physics, the Faculty of Physics or the wider Göttingen Campus.
The programme of the Masters stream "Theoretical Physics" is designed for a winter semester (October) start. Applicants wishing to start in the summer semester (April) should bear in mind that some self-study will be required in order to take full advantage of the summer semester courses from the beginning; pointers to relevant background reading will be provided on request. Local students are encouraged to take the "Advanced Quantum Mechanics" module as part of their Bachelor studies if they want to start the Masters programme in the summer semester.

Advanced Computational Physics Lab
In the advanced computational lab module (M.Phy.1405), students will become acquainted with advanced computational methods and implement these methods themselves using standard programming languages (Python). They will have to demonstrate the correctness of the implementation, apply the methods to a given physics problem, discuss and analyze numerical errors and interpret the numerical data. Students enrolled into the Theoretical physics strand in the Master of Physics program are encouraged to take this module.
