Evolution and systematics of fossil and extant ferns and lycophytes. Systematics, biogeography and conservation of Neotropical extant ferns and lycophytes with special focus on Caribbean species.

• 2014-2015 Exploring the Cuban diversity of Adiantum (Pteridaceae) with emphasis on Cuban and West Indian endemics using chloroplast DNA markers. Project leader. Funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT).
