Welcome to the website of the Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS) - the graduate school for mathematics and natural sciences at the University of Göttingen!
Welcome Note
The doctorate as first independent research work represents one of the most exciting and formative time in the academic life of young scientists. GAUSS as the largest graduate school of the University of Göttingen provides the ideal environment and infrastructure for a professional and interdisciplinary education on an excellent level to support the manifold learning and qualification processes of the young researchers.
It is not knowledge, but the act of learning, not possession but the act of getting there, which grants the greatest enjoyment.
Carl Friedrich Gauß
Combined under the roof of GAUSS, about 1,200 doctoral candidates from the five founding faculties (Biology/Psychology, Chemistry, Geosciences/Geography, Mathematics/Computer Sciences and Physics) and the Göttingen Graduate Center for Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biology (GGNB) do their research work on an international campus.
In this respect, GAUSS is responsible for the award of the degree 'Dr. rer. nat.' and the equivalent degree 'Ph.D., Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences' as well as for quality assurance of the offered structured doctoral programs (see Our Mission).
Within these programs we intend to prepare our students for the challenges in leading positions inside or outside of academia. We aim to qualify them to shape our environment and society in an open-minded, creative, visionary and sustainable way.
Prof. Dr. Ivo Feußner
