The gender pay gap in the W-payroll system
Professors are paid according to the W-payroll system, in which each individual professorship is assigned to one of three payroll groups. The remuneration consists of a fixed base salary for each level and negotiable performance-based pay. As a result, there are large differences in actual salaries, which can be attributed to different faculty backgrounds and different levels of performance, among other things. In addition to these expected differences, however, there is also a gender pay gap (GPG) among professors. In the project "Contributions to reducing the gender pay gap in the W-payroll: Analysis of historical data and advancement of gender equality controlling", an interdisciplinary team investigated which factors contribute to the emergence of the gender pay gap and how the gap can be reduced.
The project involved the cooperation of Prof. Dr. Thomas Kneib (Statistics) and Prof. Dr. Krisztina Kis-Katos (International Economic Policy) from the Faculty of Economics, Anika Werkmeister from the Human Resources Department, Aline Georgi from the Finance and Controlling Department, and Dr. Doris Hayn from the Equal Opportunities and Diversity Office. Differentiated analyses of the gender pay gap at the University of Göttingen since the introduction of the W-payroll scale were carried out on the basis of individual salary histories. Recommendations for action were derived to reduce the gender pay gap and develop routine analyses for gender equality controlling by defining standard operating procedures (SOPs). Currently, a scientific publication is being prepared to present the results in detail, which will then be available on this page. In addition, there are plans to update the results regularly in order to provide information on the development of the gender pay gap. The updated results will also be made available on this page.
