Project
Considering the vegetation as climate mirror, we have on paleobotany reconstruction an efficient way to predict changes on environment caused by climate changes, because it provides information about how climatic phenomena occurred and what were responses of environment. In this respect, the objective of this work is to carry out reconstruction of Late Quaternary paleoenvironmental, focusing the Atlantic Rainforest, which is a rich biome in biodiversity, and it has suffering changes promoted by human activities with use and occupation of its territory improperly. In developing this work, we will integrate the palynologic data base, in the care of Department of Palynology and Climate Dynamics, with simulations carried out by the computational models to rebuild the climate and vegetation conditions of the Atlantic Rainforest during Late Quaternary with a regional perspective. Also will be evaluate the fire susceptibility of the environment and its influences on vegetation succession. So, with this work, we will build a large data base of environmental succession in the Atlantic Rainforest carried by past climate changes and thus provide important informations to the scientific and civil societies about the best ways to preserve the biome, mitigating the adverse effects of currently and future climate changes. This way, it might be avoided large losses of environmental and social resources, in view of its high degree of endemism and inadequate occupation made by society, exposed to risks that are worsening due to weather extremes as torrential rains causing floods and landslides, hillsides.
