Poetry Reading and Book Presentation with Ellen Hinsey and Tomas Venclova
Tomas Venclova knew them all: Joseph Brodsky und Czeslaw Milosz, Wislawa Szymborska, Anna Achmatowa, Boris Pasternak and the Soviet dissidents. As a child, he witnessed the occupation of his homeland - first by Soviet Russia, then by Nazi Germany. As poet and translator, he later became a target of the KGB. In 1976, he co-founded the Lithuanian Helsinki group for human rights and was deprived of his citizenship a year later. Living an emigrant's life, he taught at Yale University until 2012. Venclova will discuss his experiences of living on two different continents in a poetic conversation with Ellen Hinsey, a poet herself, who has recently published a long interview with Venclova entitled Magnetic North: Conversations with Tomas Venclova (Suhrkamp 2017).
The poetry reading/book presentation will take place on Wednesday, May 3 at 8.00 p.m. at the Literarische Zentrum (Düstere Str. 20, 37073 Goettingen). The event is open to the public and free of charge.
