The NTNU is the largest single university in Norway since a merger in 2016. Its roots date back to the foundation of the Trondheim Academy in 1760. Today, it is an international oriented university, which has its headquarters in Trondheim and campuses in Gjøvik and Ålesund. While NTNU’s main profile lies in science and technology, the variety of its study programmes also include the humanities, social sciences, economics, medicine, health sciences, educational science, architecture, entrepeneurship, art disciplines and artistic activities.


The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies is part of the Faculty of Humanities and offers education and research in the fields of religious studies and philosophy.

MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society in Oslo

MF offers education and research in close interaction in theology, religious studies, humanities and social sciences. Research and education at MF include the following fields: Biblical Studies and Classical Languages, Diaconal Ministry, Education and Pedagogy, Ethics and Philosophy of Religion, Politics and Science, Practical Theology, Psychology of Religion, Systematic Theology, as well as the Study of Religion.

Research at MF is characterized by various different research groups in all of these fields. Examples are "SELF: Ancient Self-Perceptions in Comparative Perspective" in Biblical Studies and Classical Languages, or "Migration, Minorities and Marginalization" in Diaconal Ministry. These research groups aim to promote and maintain research at MF at high quality, to develop and implement research projects, academic publications and research communication. Academic staff members at MF are typically members of one or more of these research groups, but researchers from other institutions may also be members, making research at MF inter-disciplinary.

VID Specialized University Stavanger

VID Specialized University offers approximately 60 study programs in the fields of health and social sciences, educational science, management, diaconia and theology with the ambition to become a full university by the year 2028. Its research is based upon the Christian faith and values and has the goal to educate professional practitioners. The strong research profile of VID lies within practice-related research, diversity, social inequality and vulnerable groups, as well as global Christianity. Campuses are in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Sandvika and Tromsø, while a decentralized study program in nursing in Helgeland is also offered.

The letters in VID stand for Specialized (Vitenskapelig), International (Internasjonal) and Diaconal (Diakonal).
