Zoological collection
The zoological collection of the institute provides types for research. Another focus is on public relations as part of the Zoological Museum. The most important part of the collection of about 150,000 individuals is the type collection of species from the sand-gap system of the whole world. The sand-gap fauna was recognized and described in its diversity by the working group and the cooperation partners of Professor Peter Ax in the second half of the 20th century. There are also specimens of the first German deep-sea expeditions in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The 19th century collection of birds of prey includes birds of all latitudes and continents, including specimens of extinct bird species.
In the insect collection, there are numerous records of European, South American and Asian butterflies, which are an archive of historical distribution patterns.
