Sustainable IT Resource Management by Nils-Holger Schmidt
Sustainable IT Resource Management
The increasing economical, ecological and social significance of information systems (IS) demands reorientation for IS management. Ever-growing energy consumption, waste streams, data amounts and performance expectations require management concepts that consider these forces.
Sustainable IT resource management is being investigated within the key activities of IS service provisioning, following the processes source, make, deliver, and return through which the value creation of IS organisation takes place. For each of the processes a continuum of appropriate measures to implement sustainable IT resource management can be assigned.

We are working on this topic closely together with our partner from the Technical University of Berlin
Our research questions
- How can the concept of sustainability be applied to ICT organizations?
- Which are the incentives and constraints of sustainable actions?
- Under which strategic conditions do sustainability activities lead to a competitive advantage?
- Which concrete measures can be applied in each of the value chains processes of ICT organizations?
- On what does a successful implementation depend on?
- How can the success be measured?
