Green Belt -– A Model Region for Sustainability

Client
German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
Project monitoring by German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU)

Duration
01/10/2007 – 31/05/2010

Brief description
When the Iron Curtain fell at the end of the 80s , the former border gave way to a land strip running through Europe, in which nature had been able to flourish undisturbed throughout decades. This “green belt” measures 1393km in Germany with a surface area of 14.000 ha, making it the longest woodland and open area biotope compound in Germany. The Federal State and the Länder have committed themselves to preserving the ecological potential of the green ribbon. In terms of the principle of sustainability, the green ribbon represents the unique chance to exemplify the compatibility of successful economic and ecological development. In order to gain from this chance, the project aims at the following:

  • Exemplary operationalisation of regional conservation-oriented sustainability by means of applicable and testable indicators of sustainability in 4 selected model regions (Region Eichsfeld-Werratal, Schaalsee-region, region Elbe-Altmark-Wendland, region Thüringer Schiefergebirge-Frankenwald).
  • Analysing the effects of the developmental instruments, methods and aids in matters of sustainability.
  • Composing recommendations on how to design sustainable regional economic development and regional communication as well as the readjustment of regional, conservation-oriented aiding and development instruments.
