With the combination of mass spectrometry and electroantennography the Department of Forest Zoology and Forest Conservation belongs to the most progressive research institutes in the field of chemical ecology. The equal splitting of the amounts of substance between mass spectrometer (vacuum) and the EAD detector (atmospheric pressure) is achieved by an adequate selection of restriction capillaries.
The following graph shows an example for the high potential of the hyphenated techniques: The strongest reaction in the EAD signal at ca. 7 min occurs in response to a substance which is hardly detectable in the MS chromatogram. Without the information gained by the insect antenna the relevancy of this compound could easily be overlooked in the interpretation of the MS results.
