DaNuMa Summer School "Machine Learning in Animal Sciences"

Are you doing your PhD in livestock farming and use machine learning methods for data analysis? Or your topic is machine learning or data science in general, and your focus is on applying methods to real-world animal data? Then our Summer School is the right thing for you! Over a period of seven weekdays, we offer guest lectures and workshops that deal with specific use cases of machine learning in livestock farming, with a focus on the analysis of visual data. The Summer School is part of the project DaNuMa and will be held at Kiel University.

Learning Goal
The aim of the Summer School is to gain proficiency in the use of the deep learning library 'PyTorch' by working on various practical problems and to gain an overview of current research questions in the context of machine learning in livestock farming.

Contents
The guest lectures and workshops will cover the following topics, among others:
- Basics of Deep Learning and Pytorch
- Overview of current Deep Learning methods
- Areas of application of sensor data in livestock farming
- Audiogram analysis
- Regression with neural networks
- Keypoint detection
- Detection and tracking
- Segmentation

The speakers for the lectures will be added as soon as they have been confirmed.

Requirements
The workshops require a basic understanding of the Python programming language. Basic concepts such as object orientation, functions or loops should be familiar and experience with the Python libraries Numpy and Pandas is also helpful. If you do not yet have basic Python knowledge, we recommend that you complete a Python course before starting the Summer School. For example, the course 'Python for Econometrics', which is offered by the University of Goettingen, is a good option. The course is intended for independent study and the materials are available online at pyecon.org. A password is required to access the videos (pyecon.org/videos/). To obtain it, you can simply write an e-mail to jonathan.henrich@uni-goettingen.de.

Registration
For information on registration and costs for the Summer School or if you have any further questions, please contact us via e-mail: jonathan.henrich@uni-goettingen.de. If you are interested in participating, please let us know by March 31, 2024.
