Details
The subject "Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era" pursues the study of Latin literature written in the period from 500 to 1800 AD. It provides direct access to the overwhelming quantity and variety of texts written in Latin during the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and well into modern times.
Since a large part of this literature is available in manuscripts and early prints, the subject is pioneering the indexing of these texts. Therefore, in addition to the study of literature and language, the training also includes the study of manuscripts (codicology) and the study of historical written forms (palaeography).
For neighbouring disciplines such as history, the competences taught in Latin philology of the Middle Ages and modern times are also of central importance for independent scholarly handling of sources (charters, chronicles, etc.).
The Department of Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era in Göttingen offers its students an education in which they are part of a personal and individual environment from the beginning of their studies to their doctorate. As one of the most traditional German locations, Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and Modern Times in Göttingen offers a diverse range of courses.
The general academic environment in Göttingen and the connection of the department to neighbouring subjects also open up unique opportunities for students to develop and deepen their own research interests. The broad range of courses, the libraries in and around Göttingen as well as the institutional anchoring of the subject in the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies provide an ideal space to find and pursue ideas and to enter into an interdisciplinary dialogue.
Research foci of the subject are:
- High and late medieval literary and educational history
- Humanism and Reformation in Germany
- History of genres
- rhetoric
- historical communication
The cultural, literary and linguistic competence of the graduates ensures a wide range of opportunities on the labour market: non-school educational institutions, publishing houses and journalistic professions come into question, but especially libraries, universities and non-university research institutions. The urgently needed staff for various long-term DFG projects on manuscript cataloguing can also be recruited from the number of graduates. Finally, with the appropriate combination of subjects, museums, archives and other documentation institutions also come into question.
