Details
Social and Cultural Anthropology closely looks at the different ways of life of human in their cultural and social forms of expression. This comprises a comprehensive range of different areas, for example, social, political and economic phenomena as well as religion, value systems and cultural identities. These are examined in regards to their origin, change and current context.
One focus is on the Indo-Pacific region and Africa. Students deal with questions of cultural diversity, differences and identity as well as the application of the most important ethnological methodology.
The Bachelor's programme Social and Cultural Anthropology will give the students sound specialised knowledge necessary for professional practice as well as the ability to understand the central connections within the subject area and to apply basic scientific methodology and knowledge. The students will gain specialised competence by treating current problems of socio-political relevance from a holistic and understanding perspective. One focus is on the the Indopacific and Africa. The students deal with questions of cultural diversity, differences and identity as well as with the application of ethnological methodology. These competences form the basis for research-oriented further education within the frame of a Master's and Ph.D. programme or for entering into different professions; possible occupations include work with international organisations, in international economic cooperation, in culture management, culture mediation, and in museums and the media.
The Bachelor's programme goes beyond the scope of specialised knowledge by imparting key competences helpful to successfully enter into a profession (practice-oriented profile) or to take up a Master's programme (research-oriented profile).

Structure
In addition to the subject-specific studies of Social and Cultural Anthropology, students will study a second subject outside of the field of ethnology, forming an area of competence, for example economic sciences, law, gender studies, political science. The practical part of studies is formed by an interuniversitary semester. Students are encouraged to use this semester to conduct studies abroad and internships in one of the two areas of concentration.
Here students can take advantage of our cooperation with, among others, the National University of Singapore, the University of Dar es Salaam/Tansania as well as the Universitas Udayana Denpasar/Bali.
