Summary information
The Harapan Rainforest is the first ecosystem restoration area in Indonesia located in Jambi, South Sumatra, Indonesia. The Harapan Rainforest Project covers an area of over 100,000 ha of lowland forest and is used by communities living in and around the forest. Since entering into a forest restoration concession in 2007, the Harapan Rainforest is managed under a 95-year license by the BirdLife International consortium (comprising Burung Indonesia, BirdLife International and the UK’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds).
Collaboration with EFForTS
A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the University of Jambi (UNJA) on behalf of the Indonesian University Consortium of EFForTS and PT. REKI has been extended on 13. February 2018. The first collaboration agreement was signed in 2012.
Joint Research activities

Within Jambi, two landscapes and 32 core sites - including transformation systems and forest reference sites - were selected for detailed analyses. The CRC scientific projects will analyze and compare a broad range of issues, including above and below ground biodiversity, soil fertility, water, nutrient and greenhouse gas fluxes, as well as economic, social, cultural and political aspects related to rainforest transformation. A particular focus will be on identifying synergies and trade-offs among and between the various ecological and socioeconomic functions, which is an important precondition for designing and implementing more sustainable systems (including biosphere reserves).
Since 2012, researchers of the University of Göttingen and counterparts from IPB, UNJA and UNTAD assess the above and below ground biodiversity of plant and animal species at PT. REKI – Harapan Forest.
