Henrike Bergmann
Director Medical Writing, ABX-CRO advanced pharmaceutical services, Forschungsgesellschaft m.b.H., Dresden
Henrike Bergmann studied chemistry (MSc) and biology at the FU Berlin 1984-1992. She then worked at the TU Berlin Institute for Environmental Hygiene on bacterial degradation of polyhalogenated aromatic compounds, aspiring for her PhD. During that time, she became pregnant and had to stop the toxic lab work instantly. Because she is bilingual (German and English), she decided to take up writing while her kids were small, and worked as a freelance scientific translator and writer from 1993-2001. With her kids both at school and seven years of writing experience, she started her first permanent role as a medical writer at the small contract research organization (CRO) 3C in 2001. 3C was merged into PAREXEL (a huge CRO) where she continued as a medical writer. From 2006 - 2008, she worked in a contract role as a Senior Medical Writer at the Pfizer EU headquarters in England. When Pfizer closed large parts of their headquarters in England and dismissed all the medical writers, Henrike accepted a role as a Senior Regulatory Consultant at PAREXEL in Berlin, where she remained until 2011, when she became Head of medical Writing Europe at the CRO RPS. RPS was bought by a hedge fund and closed the Medical Writing department, and Henrike went back to freelancing (very successfully), until this year, when she started as Director of Medical Writing at ABX-CRO, a research organization specialized in radio-oncology. Her job as a writer enabled her to keep working even though sometimes she did not have a regular employment, which was a big help as she had to raise her kids as a single mom. They are both at university now, and Henrike has more time for her hobbies, playing viola and horseback riding.
