Priming across Modalities: The Influence of Orthography on Sign and Spoken Language

This workshop brings together researchers from Georg-August-Universität Göttingen (Germany), the University of Haifa (Israel) and the Max-Planck-Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen (The Netherlands). The workshop aims to increase understanding of the factors influencing word recognition in monolingual and bilingual speakers with high and low literacy as well as bilingual deaf signers (i.e., deaf signers who are orthographically proficient in the language of their environment). Specifically, we ask to what extent language processing involves additional retrieval of related representations of the linguistic stimuli being processed, e.g., the associated orthographical representations of auditorily presented stimuli or sign language stimuli.
