Required Application Documents


Which documents do I submit to the upload portal?



  1. Online application form: This is a summary of your entries in the application form, which you received via email as a PDF document.

  2. Proof of credits earned during your studies

  3. Case 1: Your bachelor's degree at the time of application is not yet available


    In this case, please send an official certificate from your university (such as a statement of courses or a transcript) of the courses you have taken (including ECTS points, which must total at least 150 ECTS) as well as your grade point average.


    Note: To verify your eligibility for the master's programme, we must be able to confirm that you have completed sufficient courses in the areas of economic and social history, contemporary history, business administration or economics. If your Bachelor's thesis is relevant (you must have also passed the thesis), you should also include this for consideration.


    Courses completed abroad:


    If your transcript is not in German or English, it must be translated to either German or English by an official translator that also notarizes the translation.


    Case 2: You have completed a bachelor's programme and have the certificate to show it


    Please submit your complete graduation certificate. If your graduation certificate do not include the course name and ECTS credits of your completed courses, please include a proof of all courses (modules) you took, such as diploma supplement or a transcript of records (see case 1). Please don't forget to also include information from your first semesters of study, which may not be included on your official certificate.

  4. Resume this can be in either English or German and should outline your studies to date.

  5. Motivation letter a written statement (length: max. 1 page), which outlines your motivation and interest in the master's programme.


  6. Verification of sufficient German language knowledge, if your native language is not German. Accepted forms of language verification:

    • Successfully completed German language bachelor’s degree

    • School leaving certificate from a German-speaking school that corresponds to a German higher education entrance qualification

    • DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) – with an overall grade of at least DSH-2

    • TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) with at least TDN 4 on all tests

    • Examination part "German" of the assessment test at a preparatory college (Studienkolleg) – with a passing grade

    • DSD II (Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz) – Level II

    • Proficiency certification from the Goethe Institute – Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom C 2

    • telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule




  7. Applicants whose mother tongue is English or who can submit proof of sufficient English language skills do not have to submit proof of German language skills

    Successful completion of the following internationally accepted tests may not be older than three years at the moment of application: Accepted language verification



    1. Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): at least grade "B";

    2. Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): at least grade "C";

    3. IELTS Academic/IELTS Academic Online ("International English Language Testing System"): at least volume 6;

    4. Internet-based Test: "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (TOEFL iBT/TOEFL iBT Home Edition): at least 90 points;

    5. Paper-based Test: "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (TOEFL PBT): at least 550 points;

    6. UNIcert: at least level III

    7. Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic/ PTE Academic online): at least 76 points

    8. Verification of a least one business language course at level "C1" of CEF ("Common European Framework of Languages"), in the programme on which the application is based upon;

    9. CEF ("Common European Framework of Languages"): at least proof of "C1";

    10. Successful completion (certificate) of a at least two-year-programme of study held entirely in the English language




  8. Please note:


    Successful completion of one of the above tests may not be more than three years prior to receipt of the application for admission and admission to the master's programme.


  9. Official course descriptions: Documents that outline the content and expectations of courses you completed (for example excerpts from a course handbook) or a syllabus which can validate the relevance of your previous studies (see Admission requirements and selection process). Students of the University of Göttingen do not need these documents.

  10. Note:


    To verify your eligibility, we require a description of the content of the courses you have completed in economic and social history, contemporary history, business administration or economics.


    General note



    • Please do not include any evaluation letters from internships or letters of recommendations. They will not be considered.

    • Before submitting your application, please make sure that you have fully completed your application. Incomplete applications or those that are not submitted by the deadline cannot be considered and will be rejected.


    Can I simultaneously apply to several master’s programmes?


    You are welcome to apply to multiple programmes at the same time. Please ensure that you submit a separate and complete application for each programme. Use the login data sent to you for the specific course of study to upload your application documents. You will receive these after you have completed and digitally sent the application form for the respective degree programme. You have to upload a complete set of application documents for each programme separately.


    How do I apply to start beyond the first semester of studies?


    To apply to start in the programme at a higher semester level, please contact the Student Advisory Office.
