Valerie Liebs conducts a study to analyze the impact of the initiative "Knowledge for Tomorrow - Cooperative Research Projects in Sub-Saharan Africa" on the careers of its fellows. The initiative supports research projects from Postdocs in African countries south of the Sahara. Furthermore, Liebs coordinates the "Livelihood Management, Reforms and Processes of Structural Change", which is part of the Volkswagen Foundation initiative.
Valerie Liebs studied physical anthropology as well as social anthropology at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. She finalized her PhD on medicinal plant use in urban contexts in Africa at Georg August University Göttingen. In her dissertation, she analyses the problems and chances which medicinal plant users encounter in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo), as well as the manifold ways in which they deal with them. Her main research interests are medical anthropology, ethnobotany, urbanity, as well as research and academia in Africa south of the Sahara.
