The Department of Theology at Aarhus University stands out as one of the largest research environments for theological studies in Europe. It attracts internationally recognized researchers and it is both nationally and internationally renowned in areas such as Christianity in antiquity, reformation theology, bioethics and nanoethics, as well as the study of N.F.S. Grundtvig and K.E. Løgstrup.

Besides the traditional theological disciplines (Old and New Testament, Church History, Practical Theology, Dogmatics, Ethics), the research programme of Theology at Aarhus University also includes Philosopy of Religion, Missionary and Ecumenical Theology, as well as Jewish Studies and the science of Diaconia.

A wide range of methodological approaches from the fields of history, philology, history of literature, philosophy, sociology, politology and psychology make up the research competences of the academic staff, which is also often involved in interdisciplinary projects with researchers from other fields. An example for that would be “Classical Antiquity: Tradition and Transformation” (CAH), a research programme which has the goal to study the classical antiquity with its cultures, languages and societies on the basis of material remains as well as textual sources from that time period. In this programme, classical archaeologists and philologists work together in close links with researchers from the fields of ancient history, theology and religious studies.
