Documents for the application: Sufficient German language skills
If you are not a native German speaker, you must demonstrate sufficient German language skills on level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). You can demonstrate these skills by the successful completion of
- the DSH-exam (at least DSH-2) or
- the TestDaF (at least 4XTDN4) or
- the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 or
- the telc C1 Hochschule.
- DSD II
- ÖSD C1
- Supplementary examination from an Austrian or Swiss university, level C1 .
Applicants who have passed an equal exam, can apply for an exemption at The Language Centre German as a Foreign Language (Lektorat Deutsch als Fremdsprache). A DSH-certificate from another university can only be accepted if the exam regulations of the university are registrated at the HRK and if your German language skills actually correspond to the required DSH-level (see here).
It is on your responsibility to acquire the German language skills that are required for the enrolment in time.
Exceptions to this rule:
For the following major programme as well as for the following minor programs are German language knowledge on the level B2 required. You can demonstrate these skills by the successful completion of the DSH-exam (at least DSH-1) or the TestDaF (at least 4xTDN3).
- Major subject:
- TransRomania Studies: Romance languages, literatures and cultures (Single Honours MA, 78 C or Joint Honours MA, 42 C)
- Minor subjects:
- Galloromanistik (MA minor subject, 36 C or 18 C)
- Hispanistik (MA minor subject, 36 C or 18 C)
- Italianistik (MA minor subject, 36 C or 18 C)
- Lusitanistik (MA minor subject, 36 C or 18 C)
For the admission to the following English-language Master's programmes are German language skills not required:
- Major subjects:
- Amercian Studies (North American Studies) (Joint Honours MA, 42 C)
- Digital Humanities (Single Honours MA, 78 C or Joint Honours MA, 42 C)
- East Asian Studies/Modern Sinology (Single Honours MA, 78 C or Joint Honours MA, 42 C)
- English: Language, Literatures and Cultures (Single Honours MA, 78 C or Joint Honours MA, 42 C)
- Iranian and Persianate Studies (Single Honours MA, 78 C or Joint Honours MA, 42 C)
- Linguistics (Single Honours MA, 78 C or Joint Honours MA, 42 C)
- Minor subjets:
- Anglophone Literature and Culture (MA minor subject, 36 C)
- American Studies (North American Studies) (MA minor subject, 36 C)
- Digital Humanities (MA minor subject, 36 C)
- English: Language, Literatures and Cultures (MA minor subject, 36 C or 18 C)
- Language in Focus: Linguistics and Medieval English Studies (MA minor subject, 36 C)
- Linguistik (Linguistics) (MA minor subject, 36 C or 18 C)
- Modern Indian Studies (MA minor subject, 36 C)
- Modern China (MA minor subject, 36 C)
- Informatics (Applied Computer Studies) (MA minor subject 36 or 18 C-)
In case of admission to some of the mentioned English-language programmes you must attend modules within the field of German as a Foreign Language totalling 12 Credits. Students who can demonstrate German language skills on level B2 of the CEFR are excluded from this regulation.
Please note:
Students who participate in an exchange programme (ERASMUS, University of California EAP, etc.), do not have to demonstrate German language skills.
