Details
The object of the Finno-Ugrian Studies programme is the acquisition of knowledge about the language and culture of the Finno-Ugrian peoples of the Baltic-Scandinavian, Middle and Eastern European and Western Siberian regions, especially the Estonians, the Finns, the Hungarians, as well as the Saami and the related peoples living within the Russian Federation.
The goal of the M.A. programme is the further development of the ability to do scientific work independently, the deepening of the knowledge of Finno-Ugrian linguistics and culture and the enhancement of the language skills already acquired during the B.A. programme.
The subject Finno-Ugrian Studies in Göttingen is characterised by fact that two of the major Finno-Ugrian languages and the cultures of their respective speakers are taught with equal priority thanks to separate teaching units.
The research foci are on history of science, language contact, and the specific history of the Finno-Ugrians as a whole, with special attention to the Estonian region and the languages of the Wolga and Kama regions.
The professions suitable for M.A. graduates mainly belong to the practical intercultural field (e.g. translator, creative artist with a special focal theme). Depending on the specific objective, additional training in the areas of translating, history and political sciences, intercultural communication, literature, or comparative studies may be necessary. The M.A. also qualifies for an academic career.
