Working at the University of Göttingen
The University’s Human Resources Department is responsible for employment contracts and other personnel matters. If you do not have a contract with the University (for instance, a one-time honorarium), please discuss the regulations with the host institute.
The Human Resources Department is in charge of the entire hiring process. Together with the host institute, they prepare all the necessary documents. Before you officially start work, an employment contract must be signed. The HR department will inform you about all the documents that must be submitted. The Welcome Centre is not involved in the hiring process.
At the University of Göttingen, as with most other universities, employees are paid according to the collective agreement for public service (TV-L). Your grade classification (which determines your compensation) is determined according to your tasks and responsibilities. Previous experience and employment will be taken into account and can affect your salary. Employees usually have to pay taxes and social security (insurance) contributions. The University will deduct these from your gross salary. The University transfers the remaining net salary to your SEPA current account, preferably in Germany. As a rule, it is not possible to receive your salary in cash. .
University ID / Employee ID
As an employee of the University of Göttingen, you will receive an employee ID card. You can use this as a physical ID, as well as for recording your time, for cashless payments in the dining halls, for borrowing books in the library, to gain access electronically to buildings and parking areas and also at the University sports facilities. Please make an appointment with the Card Office to have your card issued.

A host institution may apply for a guest card to be issued to non-employees of the University of Göttingen in order to allow them to use the University services, such as the libraries, for a limited period of time. This applies, for example, to visiting scholars, scholarship holders or freelancers. Please contact the secretariat of your institute to apply for a guest card.
