Workshop: Introduction to Quantitative Research Methods

Workshop description:
This course seeks to introduce you to the fundaments of quantitative research. It is mainly designed for those who begin to learn those methods and plan to conduct a quantitative research project.
This course will provide an overview of the quantitative research process and discuss the main components, including research questions, research hypotheses, research design, data collection, and data analysis. You will engage and analyze published research articles based on quantitative methods and develop your own research plan based on your research endeavor. In doing so, you will learn how to encounter common pitfalls and challenges of quantitative research and handle such to be prepared for your future quantitative research.
The following topics will be covered:

  • Research question development
  • Hypotheses derivation
  • Study design
  • Types of data
  • Statistical analysis



Requirements:
Some familiarity with basic statistical terminologies is necessary to participate properly. In addition to that, reading the following literature is obligatory:

Certificate:
To receive a certificate of active participation you need to meet the following demands:

  • Before workshop: Read assigned research paper and literature, prepare a short presentation of research design of the read study
  • In workshop: Active paticipation, presentation of pre-read research paper, group presentation of research design and analysis (15 min)
  • After workshop: Documentation of Research plan (max 3 pages)

Dr. Maike Greve works as postdoc researcher and head of the Digital Health Research Group at Goettingen University. She is an ample expert in applied statistics and information systems. Her research interests encompass data justice, mobile health as well as information and communication technologies for development.
