Carl-Heinz Friedel is currently a visiting researcher at the Department of Structural Geology and Geodynamics of the University of Göttingen. After studying geology at the Freiberg Mining Academy (1973-1977), he began his professional career as a mining geologist in fluorite and barite mines in the Harz Mountains and Thuringian Forest. From 1990 to 1993 he was employed at the TU Berlin in the department of petrology (DFG grant), where he completed his doctorate on tectonics and metamorphism of the central Harz Mountains in 1995. From 1995 to mid-1996 he conducted structural and petrological studies in the Osterzgebirge at the GFZ Potsdam. He continued temporarily as a geologist in Freiberg and Leipzig. In 2000, he was appointed as senior geologist at the federal Geological Survey of Saxony-Anhalt and served as head of the Geology working group. Until his retirement in 2017, his work focused on geological mapping, the processing of drill cores and tasks on the final disposal of radioactive waste. His long-standing scientific interest is the geology of the Harz Mountains, in particular their structural development and tectonics. In cooperation with other scientists, he regularly organises workshops on the geology of the Harz Mts., supervises bachelor's and master's students and is an enthusiastic filed trip guide (see his ResearchGate account).
