The function of the macro domain
Using a model system which has just one protein with a single macro domain we produced a gene knock out and are currently investigating the importance of the macro domain for life span and reproduction. As the macro domain of mammals has been shown to repress the enzymatic activity of PARP1, a protein involved in DNA damage repair, we are specifically interested whether in knock out animals the macro domain is likewise involved in DNA damage repair processes and apoptosis.
