Dr. Enrico Ascalone
Summary
Enrico Ascalone was awarded the title of Associate Professor in “Cultures of Ancient Near East” in 2014 (he is now candidate for full professor). He is at the Georg-August-Universität of Göttingen from 2017 and he is the Director of the Multidisciplinary Archaeological Italian Project at Shahr-i Sokhta (Sistan-va-Bauchistan, Iran). Achieved Master (University of Rome “Sapienza”, 1999), Ph.D. (University of Naples “L’Orientale”, 2002), post-graduate specialization (University of Rome “Sapienza”, 2003), Post-Doc. (Istituto di Scienze Umane of Florence [= SUM], 2008) and the position of Expert (University of Salento, 2012-2016) in “Archaeology of Ancient Near East”, he has been researcher at the “Sapienza” University of Rome (2010-2013), ASET Institute of Berlin (2014-2015), University of Copenhagen (Saxo Institute, 2016-2017); he has been Professor at the University of Milan (2001-2006), Messina (2005-2006) and Palermo (2008-2010). Author of books on the Mesopotamia Civilization (2005), the Archaeology of Ancient Iran (2006 and 2015), the Eblaite Weighing System (2006), the Elamite Glyptic Art (2011), the Archaeological Methodology (2001 and 2004) and the Oxus-Jiroft Intercultural Relations (in press), he has edited volumes regarding the Archaeology (1999) and the commercial and cultural relations in the Ancient Near East during the Bronze Age period as seen from the Weighing and Metrological systems (2006 and 2011); he has published studies (more than ninety) principally focused to the Elamite cylinder seals, the Bronze Age Iranian history, the Ancient Near Eastern Weighting Systems and the commercial role of the Iranian and Syrian sites during Early and Middle Bronze Age periods. He has been Co-director of the Italian-Iranian Joint Archaeological Mission at Qaleh Kuchek, Kerman province, South-Eastern Iran, in 2009 and he is member of the Italian Archaeological Mission at Tell Mardikh/Ebla and Tell Tuqan, Syria, since 1993; he has also participated at the Italian-Palestinian Archaeological Mission at Tell es-Sultan/Jericho in 1998 and 1999. Organizer of two international congress (2004 and 2010) held at Rome (Weights in Context. Bronze Age Weighing Systems of Eastern Mediterranean: Chronology, Typology, Material) and Palermo (The City Before and After its Foundation), he is the scientific responsible for publication of weights, seals and sealing coming from the Iranian excavations at Shahr-i Sokhta (1997-2015) and for the weights found in the Ebla, Tell es-Sultan, Batrawi and Tell Tuqan excavations; he is under contract for publishing the cylinder seals placed in the National Museum of Iran (Tehran).
