Comparison of morphological and molecular sex determination on skeletons from a mass grave of the Napoleon army from Frankfurt-Rödelheim
In September 2015, skeletons of 204 Individuals were found during construction works in Frankfurt/Rödelheim. Everything leads to a first hypothesis that all individuals are male Napoleonic soldiers, which may come across Frankfurt due to the "Battle of Hanau" at the end of October 1813.
The aim of this master´s thesis is the morphological sex determination and the comparison of the different used methods. It is to be tested if features at the pelvis and cranium could be used for sex determination in a new series mainly consisting of individuals of one sex and different populations. The morphological investigation will be taken due to the chart "Sex Diagnosis of adult individuals" from Herrmann et al. 1990. In this chart features are listed that were also used similarly by other authors (Bruzek 2002, Phenice 1969). In addition measurements for sex determination at the cranium (Giles and Elliot 1963) and the diameter of the femoral head (Steward 1979) will be taken.
To verify different results between methods, 30 individuals will be analyzed molecularly. These analyses will be performed with the detection of amelogenin conducted in a Heptaplex PCR (multiplex mini STR system by Seidenberg et al. 2012) and a following STR-fragmentlength analysis (capillary electrophoresis).
The results can be used in further investigations in the project "Napoleons Soldaten - Morphologische und molekulargenetische Untersuchungen zur Rekonstruktion der Lebensbedingungen in der Grande Armée"
