Programme and Workshop Schedule
The workshop will begin with the inauguration in the late afternoon (around 4 p.m.) of Thursday, the 15th December and end in the evening (around 6 p.m.) of Saturday, the 17th December with a round-table discussion. Participants are expected to arrive in Göttingen on Thursday, 15th December and leave on Sunday, the 18th December, 2011.
The contributed papers will be distributed into several panels, on different topics related to the main theme. Three or four 20-minute paper presentations in a panel will be followed by a panel-discussion led by a discussant. There will also be lectures by some senior experts. All papers will be uploaded as soon as we receive them (hopefully latest by mid November). Participants are expected to have read at least all papers in his/her panel before the start of the workshop.
Besides the academic programme we also plan to organise a book exhibition and sale (of books relating to the region, especially books written by those present at the workshop).
On Thursday, 15th Dec. we will begin at the Conference Centre at around 13:00 hrs with registration and screening of a couple of ethnographic films. At 15:30 hrs there will be a half hour conducted tour of the Historische Sternwarte (Royal University Observatory, built in 1803) where the Lichtenberg Kolleg (which is the newly established Institute for Advanced Study of the University) is also housed.
The Inaugural ceremony will begin at 16:30 hrs and will end with a small reception followed by the film show. Registration is not necessary for those who want to attend only Thursday's programme.
On Sunday, the 18th Dec. the Göttingen city conducted tour will begin at 10:00 a.m. At the end of the city tour we invite you to join a tour (at noon) of the world famous ethnographic Cook-Forster collection of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Göttingen. A photo-exhibition ‘Life in the Asian Borderlands‘ by Willem van Schendel and Malini Sur is also currently on there. The visit to both the collection and the exhibition should take approximately one hour.
